Safe Contractor

Safecontractor is a contractor accreditation scheme that assesses the health & safety competency of contractors.

Clients have a legal obligation to ensure that contractors operate in a safe way. There is therefore a need to assess contractors health & safety arrangements, and increasingly this is being carried out through Safecontractor.

Many large organisations now use Safecontractor as their primary means of selecting contractors. Safecontractor is effectively the clients approved contractor list.
We capture a variety of information on contractors capabilities which will assist you when selecting a contractor for a new project or contract.


The highest technical and professional standards are applied within the Safecontractor scheme.

The Charter Standards set down the technical standards for Safecontractor. The standards include general criteria, which are applied to all applications, and specific criteria relating to the particular work activities of the applicant. Each work activity is categorised as either low, medium or high risk.

Audits are undertaken by health & safety professionals, all qualified to degree level or equivalent and with a variety of specific qualifications and backgrounds, including:

  • Environmental Health Officers
  • MSC in health, safety and the environment
  • Registered Safety Practitioners, with the Institute of Occupational Safety & Health

An internal professional guidance note sets the professional standards and procedures to be followed by the auditors.

The Charter Standards are regularly reviewed by the User Group, which represents both contractors and client organisations.

The scheme is primarily a desk top exercise with a comprehensive review of contractors health & safety documentation. We ask for documentary evidence of various actions, such as training records, sample risk assessments, etc to carry out as thorough an audit as possible without going to site.

We have to meet the same criteria – or ‘indicators’ – as other organisations, but the Standard recognises that we will meet them in our own way.

“Investors in People” recognises that organisations use different means to achieve success through their people. It does not prescribe any one method but provides a framework to help us find the most suitable means for achieving success through our people.

By focusing on training our staff and workforce we are looking to the future in a positive way.

Influences such as Health and Safety and Workplace Regulations have increased the importance of a competent well qualified workforce.

CORGI works to a tight remit prescribed by the HSE. As well as operating the register of competent gas installers, CORGI:

  • Investigates gas safety related complaints from the public
  • Provides members of the public with details of local registered installers

Over the last 30 years CORGI have become a leading authority in gas safety issues and of course, registration schemes. Our expert knowledge is now being put to use outside of the CORGI registration scheme.

All businesses, whether employers or self employed persons, who carry out work on gas fittings (using gases described in the Gas Safety (Installation & Use) Regulations (GSIUR’s)), must be CORGI registered for gas work.

Registration is a legal requirement for businesses and self-employed people working on gas fittings or appliances.

Our Corgi registration provides our clients with the confidence that our workforce is fully trained and competent as Gas Installers.
